74% of nra members, in a frank month's poll, chris, said that they support the concept that no one can buy a gun without a background check. >> when you talk like this, they don't challenge it as much. they immediately go somewhere else and say how about trying some other approach? >> if people were armed, not just a police officer, but other school officials that were trained and chose to have a weapon, certainly there would have been an opportunity to stop aggressors coming into the schools. if a person like that was armed and trained, could they have stopped the carnage in the classroom? perhaps. >> okay. you know what a .38 special is. a retired cop or something walking around. that's what they're talking about. a school teacher doesn't know how to use a gun. pulls out your cap gun, revolver, and you're up against an ak-47. what are they talking about here? or are they saying school teachers should have ak-47s? >> could you imagine even if the governor were only talking about security guards, school security guards. could you imagine at an elementary school what his gun belt wo

thanks for being with us. i want to start with this. your reaction to the nra and you heard of lapierre's statement to the nra. what's your thought on the plan put out there to put guns in schools. >> first, richard, thank you for having me. my reaction to the statement yesterday is that i'm disappointed, but not surprised, candidly, and i think we have to stay very focused here and not be put off by the kind of distraction that was put forth yesterday. we certainly need to have concrete plans to make sure our schools are safe, but the notion of adding more guns as a solution is wrong minded and we shouldn't be distracted by the comments yesterday. this is what i believe they were. >> how practical is the idea put forth? the department of labor saying that the average salary for a police officer is about $55,000. there's about 100,000 public schools across the country and it would mean $5 billion if the plan were to be carried out. >> i don't think there's anything more precious than our kids so we do need to make sure that we change and have plans to address school safety, but i don't

is the nra to deal with on these issues? i mean, talk about the power that the nra wields. >> look, i think actually the nra's power is more perceived than real, alex. when i heard the news yesterday and like jimmy, i grew up with a rifle. i grew up in pennsylvania. we went hunting. we never had handguns around but we had a rifle in the house. and we used it for hunting. that was it. but i think a lot of us who were in the hunting community have much more tolerance for stricter regulation of the handguns and especially certain kinds of handguns than most people per sooechlt and i think you see that in the polling. when i heard the news yesterday as a father of two children who i send out to public school here in washington, d.c. every day, a city that has outlawed guns but still has a very high crime rate, and the husband of a public schoolteacher, i just wanted to see my wife and two kids as quickly as possible and hug them and know that they're okay. like all other parents, i think, in the country, including the president felt when we heard the news yesterday. >> well, i can echo that. i
